A Day at Eagle Rock Reservation

If you’ve spent most of your Newark strolls in the beautiful Branch Brook Park or the historic Military Park, it might be time to elevate your perspective. Nestled on the crest of the First Watchung Mountain, Eagle Rock Reservation offers a unique blend of high-altitude history and breathtaking scenery that makes it a site to visit.
The reservation's name isn't just for show. In the 1800s, an actual eagle's nest was located on the rocky ledge, making it a landmark for early explorers. Then in the early 20th century, it transitioned to a popular destination for "pleasure drivers" in their horse-drawn carriages.
The site gained even more historical significance after 2001. Today, it is home to the Essex County 9/11 Memorial, a beautifully solemn place for reflection. By sitting at such a high elevation, the reservation provides many residents with a clear view of the city. It serves as a place of peace, honoring those lost with bronze plaques and a life-sized "Search and Rescue" dog monument.
Eagle Rock isn't just about the history; it offers the following:
- The Skyline Overlook: A walk to the edge of the plaza offers a panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline. From the George Washington Bridge down to the Verrazzano, the entire city is laid out before you.
- The Trails: If you like a bit of a challenge, there are miles of hiking and bridle trails through the woods. The terrain is rocky and forested, making you feel miles away from the urban bustle.
- Picnic Perfection: The park features rolling lawns and designated picnic areas that are shaded by massive old trees. This makes it perfect for a quiet afternoon meal.
Hiking the trails or standing at the overlook can certainly work up an appetite. While the view feeds the soul, you’ll need something a bit more substantial for the rest of your day. So before you head up the mountain, stop by or call ahead to pack a true feast.
Imagine sitting at the skyline overlook with a warm container of jollof rice or some perfectly prepared moi-moi. So, do not forget to order your delicious Nigerian meal from Ounje Alabeke when you go visiting for the history or the hiking, as a great meal makes the view even better.
