n As a new student of Rutgers-Newark, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), or Essex County College, here’s a guide to help you get settled in this hub of culture, history, and community.
1. Navigating the City
Newark is easy to navigate once you understand the transit system. For instance, the area around Rutgers and NJIT is very walkable, with most campus buildings, shops, and restaurants within a 10-15 minute stroll. Then the Newark Light Rail offers a cheap ride by connecting downtown to the Broad Street and Penn Station train stations and goes all the way up to Branch Brook Park. You can also reach New York City (a quick 20-minute ride on the PATH or NJ Transit trains), Jersey City, and countless other destinations through the Newark Penn Station. Finally, you can also check your school’s website for free transportation between buildings and student housing using the campus shuttles.
2. Best Study Spots Beyond the Library
In addition to your campus library, you can enjoy a change of scenery by grabbing a bench and studying outdoors at the Military Park with free Wi-Fi and plenty of cafes nearby. The beautiful, historic building of the Newark Public Library also offers quiet reading rooms, an art collection, and a peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect for deep focus.
3. Exploring the Culture & Fun
When you need to take a break from studying, the Newark Museum of Art, which is located right near both Rutgers and NJIT, offers free admission to many students to explore its impressive collection and a stunning planetarium. And the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) is perfect for seeing a live music or a theater show, while NHL enthusiasts have a chance to cheer the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center.
4. Eating on a Student Budget
There are a few wallet-friendly spots that offer good food outside of your dining hall. Let’s begin with the Ironbound District, which is a short walk from Penn Station, where you can find delicious Portuguese and Brazilian food. Then there’s Ferry Street that offers a perfect place to grab an affordable and delicious meal, and the upscale restaurants near campus for a special occasion or when family is visiting. And all it takes to enjoy your favorite Nigerian dish is a simple order from Ounje Alabeke.
So embrace Newark with an open mind, and you'll enjoy a rich and rewarding experience that goes far beyond your college campus.
